Why MeshRoute asks for your password
MeshRoute asks for your Mac password the first time you start a mesh. Here is why.
The short answer
MeshRoute joins your Mac to nearby devices and makes them work as one local network. macOS only lets an app do that with your permission.
So the first time you start a mesh, MeshRoute asks for your Mac password. It sets up a small background program, and then it does not ask again.
What that program does
It handles your mesh connection, and nothing else. It does not read your files, and it does not send anything to us. Your mesh traffic goes straight between your own devices. You can read the full details in our Privacy Policy.
You will see MeshRoute in System Settings
Open System Settings, then General, then Login Items & Extensions. MeshRoute is listed there under "Allow in the Background".
Leave it switched on. If you switch it off, MeshRoute cannot start a mesh and you will see an error when you try. Switching it back on fixes that.
When you delete MeshRoute, this entry disappears on its own. See Removing MeshRoute.
Why it asks again after an update
After you update MeshRoute, it may ask for your password one more time. This is normal, and it happens at most once per update.
